 Lt Oscar E. Pihlack USN

   Lt. Oscar E. Pihlack at the helm of the U.S.S. 'Lake Yahara'

                            Lt. Oscar Pihlack served with Gus after WW1 on various freighters and also lived in the

                                              same boarding house near the Brooklyn Navy Yard, see Chapter Five.

 U.S. Navy to operate certain vessels.

SS Malang

 U.S.S. 'Malang'

The Malang was seized by the United States government on 20 March 1918

and turned over to the U.S. Navy and commissioned 2 April 1918. After loading Army

supplies, the U.S.S 'Malang' steamed in convoy by Halifax, Nova Scotia, and reached Brest,

France, 13 May. She sailed along the french coast through 10 June and then sailed to the

United States and arrived in New York. The U.S.S. 'Malang' made a second voyage to

 St. Nazaire, Verdon and Bordeaux between 9 August and 25 September.

Lt. Pihlack served as the Navigation Officer during this period.

 

 

 

U.S.S. 'Mauban'

The Mauban was built in Scotland in 1900 by the Campbelltown Shipbuilding Company and prior to the

First World War cruised out of the Philippines to ports in Europe and the United States. The SS 'Mauban' was involved in a collision on

4th April 1918 with the SS 'Bilbster' resulting in the 'Bilbster' sinking. The SS 'Mauban'  was acquired by the

USSB at Cardiff, Wales the 3rd of October 1918.The 'Mauban' carried supplies between British and

French ports and completed cargo runs in February 1919.The 'Mauban' was decommissioned

at Brooklyn, New York on the 11th of April 1920 and returned to her former owners,

the Cia. Gen. de Tabacos de Filipinas of 'Manila.

S.S. 'Bird City'

                   A North American ship S.S. Bird City, under the command of Captain H. Petersen, with observing Mr. Martin Marys,

heading from Philadelphia for Buenos Aires, ran into SSW Gale force winds  with agitated sea.

!923 The lesser atmospheric pressure (corrected) of 1.005, 9 hPa  in the 41 latitude 31º' S and 09 longitude 51º' W.

The strong wind ceased in day 4.  The biggest force was 9 with rotation of IF for sw.

Apr 2 1929 SS "Bird City" from 45o34'N 48o07'W to 45o55'N 48o40'W passed through ice with

several small bergs and growlers extending northward as far as could be seen.
