In World War One, the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) fought thirteen major engagements in Europe between 1917 and 1918.
Each combat clasp pictured below represents one of  the following battles.


St.Mihiel: 1st US Army. This was the first operation in Europe and Victory for American troops involving some
550,000 American servicemen from 14 Divisions incurring 7,000 casualties. 15,000 German troops were taken prisoner.


Meuse-Argonne: 1st US Army. This was the largest operation to date for the AEF who faced 40 German Divisions.
Casualities numbered 26,277 killed and 95,786 wounded. In was in this battle that the lost battalion of the 77th Division was
surrounded and in which Sgt.Alvin York of the 82nd Division eliminated 35 machine gun positions and captured 132 German soldiers

Champagne-Marne: 85,000 American troops participated, 4 Divisions and where the 3rd Division gained its motto, 'Rock of the Marne'


Somme Offensive: 54,000 American troops participated in this battle suffering 11,500 casualties


Aisne-Marne: 270,000 troops participated in this battle suffering 10,000 casualties.


Defensive Sector::awarded to AEF for service between 6 Apr1917 - 11 Nov 1918 and participants in minor engagements


France Service bar: awarded to troops who served in support roles, there were 621,000 issued.

Atlantic Fleet: Awarded by the Navy for participation in operations in the Atlantic: 43,185 issued
